My dear friend and mentor John Lynn has decided to step back from cosplay photography. If you’ve never seen his work, you are really missing out on something truly wonderful.

Again, none of these photos are mine; they are a very small sampling of my favorite photos that he has done.

This past weekend, exactly a year to the day when I first met him in the flesh, John Lynn — also known to his friends and fans as SNTP — announced that he was leaving cosplay photography to focus on other pursuits.

I’ll admit that I was a bit surprised. I knew that he had been thinking about stepping back from the hobby, but I didn’t think he would leave it entirely — especially since he had given me such a great pep talk after my terrible experience at Anime LA.

John is a great talent, to be sure. The concepts he devises for his shoots are imaginative, and his post-production work is awe-inspiring.

Even a simple hallway shot or a picture taken at dinner becomes something epic and mind-blowing in the sure hands of this skilled and talented craftsman.

More than that, though, is the man himself.

Despite being one of the most talented artists I have ever had the honor and privilege of working with, he is also one of the kindest and most generous people I know.

John is incredibly humble and needlessly self-effacing, which is probably why he is continuously striving to improve his already high-caliber work.

Friendly and approachable, John is always willing to offer advice and encouragement; so much so, that I’d recently taken to calling him “senpai” (先輩), the Japanese term for “elder” or “mentor”. xD

Many photographers prefer to work alone out of fear that the presence of others will be a hindrance or will result in “stolen” shots. Not John!

John has invited me along on several of his shoots, and as a result I’ve learned so much just by watching him work! I’ve also met many other awesome and talented people, including Enix Remix, pictured above.

I know that I’ll still be able to hang out with John and to ask him for pointers, but I can’t help but feel that the cosplay community is a lot less rich now that it has lost a talented artist and a wonderful human being. I know that with his dedication, talent, and just plain decency, he will have success and happiness wherever his journeys take him. I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing him the best and I hope he will rejoin the community one day. We love you, John!
