2016: The Year in Cons

03 October 2017

It seems kind of pointless to recap 2016 when 2017 is starting its final quarter, but I got nothing else going on, lol orz.

First up was the aborted premiere of Looking for Miku at Anime Los Angeles because ALA is trash. First, they scheduled us for 6pm on Friday (we had asked for 9pm or later since some of us were coming from LA) so my co-panelist Jacklyn (who plays Minnie in the film) and I wound up spending 90 minutes in traffic just getting there since it was right in the middle of rush hour. Then, despite repeated assurances from the head of con that our tech needs would be met, they were not prepared to provide the necessary audio hookups. So basically, we spent the entire panel talking about a film that we couldn’t watch and goofing off with the awesome and understanding audience. This was Jacklyn’s second con ever (the first was when we shot the film) and she has opted not to join us for panels since then; she’s too polite to say so but I’m sure her experience with ALA has something to do with it. I was also so disgusted by the way they treated us that I didn’t bother going back the rest of the weekend and skipped them in 2017.

It wasn’t until a few months later that we actually premiered Looking for Miku at Ninja-Con! If you happen to watch the trailer on YouTube or FilmFreeway, you’ll see references to this screening. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time to check out the con since the film was rendering up almost until the screening, but what little of it I did see was fun as usual. My friend Danny runs a great event and hopefully you’ll get a chance to check it out if you haven’t already.

After Ninja-Con was Anime Expo which, I have to admit, was the best AX ever, mainly due to Your lie in April creator Naoshi Arakawa‘s presence. For once they had some worthwhile exclusives and I managed to score some awesome loot. Of course, they still managed to miss on the Charity Auction but it wouldn’t be AX without some kind of fail so I wasn’t terrible surprised.

The last con of the year was Pacific Media Expo, where the highlight was the Hitomi concert as well as our screening of Looking for Miku. I was joined by Jackson (who plays Jackie) and we had a great audience who asked us interesting questions and gave us lovely compliments afterwards. Despite the late start of the panel (not our fault), we had a great time at PMX.

Even though I didn’t go to very many cons in 2016, I still had a good time at 75% of them. Still a passing grade! ^^

Pacific Media Expo 2016, Days 1-2

26 September 2017

Pacific Media Expo returned to its traditional weekend in November for 2016! These’ve actually been sitting for a while but haven’t gone up ’til now b/c Looking for Miku and lazy. ^^;

The Guest of Honor was Hitomi of @home cafe, a maid cafe in Japan. Even though she isn’t really a well-known artist, she put on a great show.

The show actually ran for a little under an hour, including the giveaway (which included calling audience members up on stage) and the group photo.

Hitomi looked right at me! 😀

One of my friends noticed Spawn‘s Michael Jai White in the lobby.

Had never heard of BiS before this late-night panel.

Swap meet was kind of nuts, lol.

The Chillin’ with Voice Actors panel ran late since they apparently started late, so we were bumped back like half an hour. :/

Closed out the night (and con) with Captain Savvy’s Singalong Crew.

PMX 2016 was PMX; mostly hanging out with friends, checking out the main concert and swap meet, and screening Looking for Miku.

Looking for Miku at Ronin Expo [2017]!

23 May 2017

Happy to announce that we’ll be screening Looking for Miku at Ronin Expo! For those of you who don’t know, Ronin Expo is the reboot of Ninja-Con, so we’re happy to be making a (re)appearance there!

We premiered the award-nominated anime fan film in an unfinished state last time so it’ll be the first time the final version of the film will be shown at this venue (admission to Ronin Expo is required to attend). Stay after the show to talk with the filmmakers about the film, con crushes, and other topics! RSVP on Facebook, and hope to see you there!

Anime Expo 2016 Goodsmile Racing

20 December 2016

The final post of 2016 is the final post from Anime Expo! This supplement features the Goodsmile Racing exhibit and related itasha!

Good Smile Company introduced Goodsmile Racing in 2008. With Crypton Future Media’s Hatsune Miku as its Race Queen mascot and fans as its sponsors, GSR won Japan’s 2011 Super GT GT300 class series race and continues to churn out new mascot designs and merchandise every year.

The first Racing Miku was illustrated by redjuice, an artist I actually have an artbook by (although I don’t think this Miku is really indicative of his style).

The only Racing Miku figure I have is the 2012 version, which features in my film Looking for Miku!

Not much on display for 2016’s season but you could buy Nendoroid and figma (not pictured) versions of Racing Miku along with other GSR goods.

Here are 3D versions of Racing Miku’s outfits!

Of course, there were a few GSR and Vocaloid-inspired itasha on display as well!

Someone with good taste decided to go with Racing Luka instead!

Hey, it’s peppymiint cosplay!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Anime Expo 2016 Itasha

13 December 2016

The second supplemental album from AX2016 is the first of two featuring itasha (cars decorated with anime, manga, and video game characters)!

Danny Choo‘s Suenaga Mirai featured on this itasha and itachari (decorated bicycle).

This Angel Beats! fan also loves In-N-Out, as we all should!

Still haven’t seen this Kantai Collection (Kancolle) that’s everywhere.

I had no idea what this was from until I looked up Kagerou. I will say, though, that my Haruhi-inspired “Obey” logo is better. 😉

Here’s another Vocaloid-inspired itasha. This owner must really love Black Rock Shooter since the license plate says “BRS” and there was a cosplay jacket on display along with some other props.

Don’t know too much about To Love-Ru, but when this Yami cosplayer showed up I had to get her with the car!

Itasha featuring Race Queen versions of the pilots from Evangelion!

Fan-owned itansha (motorcycles) like this Sailor Moon bike were also on display in the Entertainment Hall.

Anime Expo 2016 Anniversaries

06 December 2016

The first of three(!) supplemental Anime Expo albums, since I took a bunch of pictures and am too lazy to post them all at once. ^^;

There were two big anniversaries being celebrated at this year’s AX; AX’s 25th and P.A.Works‘ 15th! Both had sizable exhibits in the Entertainment Hall that allowed attendees to check out the historical artifacts related to each.

This wall at the AX 25th Anniversary Exhibit contained Program Guides from every AX! How many do you have?

Anime Expo used to be known as AnimeCon. I actually grabbed a couple of those Anime Reference Guides at PMX many years later!

Evangelion and British stoicism obviously influenced some of these shirt designs.

What are the chances that some artwork destined for Charity Auction made it into the AX archives?

P.A.Works also had an Anniversary Exhibit!

Big banners of Tenshi and Yuri from Angel Beats!

Huge row of standups! Which one is your waifu?

Wait, Noizi Ito worked on Another? Guess that’s going to the top of the list!

Enjoy these trips down Memory Lane, especially if it’s your first!
