East Meets West [2016]

07 March 2017

Actually got up early on a weekend (wut?) and decided to run around to some spots I hadn’t been to in ages on the west side (west of me, anyway)! I really need to do a better job of taking pictures of the outsides of these places, lol. (Sorry for the crap cell phone quality. OTL)

First stop on my adventure was Big Lou’s, a consignment shop/slot car raceway on Sepulveda, where you can find all sorts of interesting things for sale.

From plushies to ornaments and from Hot Wheels to Transformers, there’s something for everyone here!

I’m pretty sure all those comic book standees are handmade. :O

Afterwards, made it over to Gardena’s Tokyo Central & Main supermarket, which used to be a Marukai.

Another reason to quit this hobby. DX

Here’s an entire section dedicated to Dragon Ball.

If Dollfies aren’t your thing, you can still invest in an Evangelion action figure that costs more than your car payment!

It’s a good thing I haven’t gotten into Gundam (yet)!

The Pokemon saw me coming, haha.

While I didn’t buy anything at Big Lou’s or Tokyo Central & Main, I did buy stuff at second-hand bookstore Book Off’s Del Amo and Gardena locations. I impulse bought the Nono action figure since I actually wound up liking Gunbuster 2: Diebuster the second time around and finally completed my (regular version) collection of the Japanese version of Your Lie in April — for much cheaper than what Kinokuniya was charging in-store or even at AX!

Anime Expo 2016, Day 4

01 November 2016

The last day of any AX is usually pretty hectic, but this time — since there were some pretty weak offerings at the Charity Auction — I was able to finally take a closer look at the things in the Entertainment Hall (albums linked below), finish my run through the Exhibit Hall, and also score some sweet loot!

First order of the day (after checking out of the hotel) was to stop by the Charity Auction. Here’s a pair of clear files signed by voice actor Suwabe Junichi.

Sushio contributed some cool little Kill la Kill sketches.

I was prepared to spend some money on an original sketch (or even the one this signboard is based on, which was displayed at the Kodansha HUB), but unfortunately this was all there was from Arakawa-sensei. So, so disappoint.

Since Charity Auction was a bust, headed to the Entertainment Hall. I think this chalk painting by the Chalk Twins is of Guts from Berserk.

Found a Kao-chan! Tried to get her to pose like that Aniplex+ figure but it was too crowded, lol.

I still have yet to watch a single episode of Dragonball Z.

This Saber Bride (and sword) was awesome!

These skate decks are too pretty to stomp on!

Line art for an upcoming deck design featuring everyone’s favorite Vocaloid, Hatsune Miku.

There were definitely some highs and lows, as with every AX, but Kao-chan helped me through it this year! ๐Ÿ˜€

Anime Expo 2016, Day 3

25 October 2016

Day 3 was a pretty lazy day; finally got to check out the Dealers Hall in earnest with my friends, looking at drool-worthy goods and double-dipping on, of course, Your Lie in April stuff. xD;

I think this is D.Va from Overwatch, no?

I’m waiting for One Piece to finish before I start it, but I have a feeling it’ll be a very, very long time.

Awesome Ryuuko (Kill la Kill) cosplayer.

I’ve only been able to watch a couple of episodes of Kabaneri, but it’s awesome, just like this Mumei cosplayer! (Incidentally, the character designs for that show were done by none other than Mikimoto Haruhiko, who designed characters for the original Macross and Gunbuster, including waifu Takaya Noriko.)

Having finally finished reading Sailor Moon, I can actually recognize most of these Sailor Scouts! (The manga wasn’t in color so I’m still not 100% sure on of some of them.)

I’ve always liked this Sakura Taisen kit despite not knowing anything about the show, but there’s no way I’d be able to put one together even though it’s already in color!

Some Snow Miku and default Miku Dollfies on display with Senbonzakura Miku!

I don’t usually go for third-party (ie, unofficial) merch, but I was very severely tempted by these epic versions of G1 Transformers Scorponok and the Dinobots! (I’m not really sure how Scorponok would look in his alt modes, though.)

I’ve only seen a couple of episodes of One Punch Man, but it was pretty funny! They had special events at the con but I only really saw a couple of cosplayers from the series.

Day 3 loot, where I finished my sets of three, lol. Why three? Why, one to keep, one to use, and one as backup, of course! Details in the Facebook album!

Anime Expo 2016, Day 2

18 October 2016

I saw on Day 1 that Aniplex would be selling some of the Aniplex+ exclusive Kaori figures starting on Day 2 and my friend managed to get me the last one (like, the very last — it was the display copy!). They didn’t sell any of the other displays when they sold out, so I’m assuming this was their last batch of Kao-chans. Very happy to get one, especially since they sell for three-times MSRP now!

Arakawa Panel AX 2016

Was lucky my friend was already in line for Arakawa-sensei’s panel because I had some problems finding it (thanks, AX! :p ). The panel was already underway by the time they let us in and we wound up in the very last row, but at least we got to see it! No pictures were allowed, but I still managed to sneak a couple of shots and also recorded audio of it. ^^

Monster Hunter AX 2016

Later in the evening, I made my way back to con to complete a figure sale and managed to take some photos in the South Hall. I’m told this is from Monster Hunter. Would’ve been nice to get close enough to take pictures with it, but the whole area was cordoned off.

Cardcaptor Sakura Banner AX 2016

GSC didn’t allow photos of their upcoming Cardcaptor Sakura figure, but here’s one of the banner advertising it.

Anisong World Matsuri AX 2016

The Anisong World Matsuri ~Japan Super Live~ was actually this evening. Some of my friends went and enjoyed it.

Phantom of the Kill AX 2016

West Hall had this banner for the free-to-play tactical RPG Phantom of the Kill. Apparently there was a special event for it that night also.

Day 2 Loot AX 2016

Day 2 loots! I got the Aniplex+ exclusive Kaori figure; three YLiA posters that came free with each purchase; and two sets of YLiA keychains.

Anime Expo 2016, Day 1: KimiUso Ver.

27 September 2016

I don’t remember when I heard that Arakawa Naoshi, the creator of Your Lie in April (ๅ››ๆœˆใฏๅ›ใฎๅ˜˜ / Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso aka KimiUso), would be a Guest of Honor at this year’s Anime Expo, but having just finished watching Your lie in April (no idea why they only capitalize the “lie” in the manga title and not the anime title, even though the show uses the hashtag #YLiA) back in May, I was filled with great excitement (due to my love for the anime) and great dread (due to AX’s penchant for buggering things up nicely).

Well, I’m happy to report that, overall, KimiUso Con went rather smoothly! I was surprised by the efficient handling of the autograph session I attended (as opposed to the last one I went to at AX13) and was REALLY surprised that they actually had some con-exclusive merchandise for sale, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before.

Of course, I don’t usually pay as much attention to other shows as I did for YLiA, but most of the AX “exclusives” that I’ve come across are things that you can get directly from Japan or things that are just available at con first and become widely available later (like Nendoroids).

This time, though, Arakawa-sensei did some original art for AX so there was an exclusive shirt and shikishi! Too bad Anime Expo didn’t auction off the original art since I totally would’ve bid on it (I’m sure it “somehow” made its way onto one of the walls in their offices), but at least I got some cool loots!

Kotobukiya had the exclusive shirt and the Kodansha Comics HUB booth on the other side had a huge display featuring waifu Kao-chan!

Plenty of art from KimiUso was on display, including this original manga spread!

After doing my shopping, I popped across the aisle to Aniplex USAโ€‹‘s A-1 Picturesโ€‹ Exhibit.

The exhibit was kind of small but pretty interesting; they had several of these displays set up for different productions. The monitors cycled scenes created from the genga (animation drawings) below.

So here we are, back at the Kodansha Comics HUB, where they were running the Your Lie in April Quest, a texting scavenger hunt! The first 1000 participants of the day got a tote bag and the 10 fastest finishers got a free copy of volume 1!

At the finish was the tote bag you got for participating, as well as the shikishi they gave you if you showed them a copy of the manga. I was told I had a good time so I was hopeful I’d win a copy of the manga, but there were so many dirty, filthy cheaters that I don’t think Kodansha will be doing a time-based hunt again any time soon. ๐Ÿ˜› If you’re reading this, Kodansha, the photos in the Facebook album are proof that I actually did the hunt!

After all that running around, I was finally able to slow it down a bit and take in some of the con. I ran into Nagato, my waifu from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, so I had her hold my Japanese copy of YLiA volume 1, fufufu.

Loots from Day 1! (Yes, despite not buying much/anything the last few AXes, I actually went full Konata Izumi from Lucky Star and spent so much money that each day gets its own loot pic!) Details in my Facebook album!

Anyway, the primary missions on Day 1 were to get Arakawa-sensei’s autograph (and to give him the crappy fan letter I wrote) and to get as much loot as I could find, so mission accomplished! There’ll be another post for Day 1 with the non-YLiA photos, and the YLiA stuff from the rest of the weekend will appear in the posts for the other days, so be sure to check them out, too!

Anime Expo 2015, Day 4

17 November 2015

The last day of AX is usually a mad rush to get out of the hotel and do a final sweep of the dealers hall before it closes, but since I did most of my poking around yesterday I was able to take it a bit easier and even managed to have breakfast!

They were already kicking us out, lol.

Once we made it back to con we went through the cosplay set area for some pictures. This little Riddler really got into it!

“Have you seen my Valkyrie?”

Ariel! โค

Snuck some shots of this Madoka in the bedroom set (hence the crop).

Checked out the Nendoroid and Little Witch Academia exhibits (some Nendo shots are in the Day 3 post and album) before going back up to the dealers hall.

Popped into Bluefin (official Gundam US distributor) for a quick sec and saw these Robo Kitties on display.

After the hall closed we went off-site to get some lunch before returning one more time so my friends could take photos of cosplayers, like this female Winter Soldier. Honestly, I was ready to call it by this point but looking back at Day 4 of AX13 (the last time I was at AX), my friends were the ones waiting for me so I guess it was only fair, lol.

Nia from Gurren Lagann! โค

I’m told this is from Monster Hunters. Hope that poor piggy wasn’t friends with whoever’s roasting on the spit!

One day I will watch One Piece! (Though I’m sure it’ll day a lot more than just one day, lol.)

Never watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, either. ^^;

First time I think I’ve ever seen Garterbelt from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

Only played Mortal Kombat a few times and I’ve only seen the first movie.

Snuck this shot of Saber Lily in the middle of a photoshoot.

Loots! Didn’t actually buy anything; most of it came out of the attendee pack, lol. That included the program, Dragon Ball air freshener, promo card from Summoner’s War, Crunchyroll fan, and coolish tote bag (still not as cool as the one from ALA9 in 2013 though). Got multiples of some items since they had a ton of bags left at the end of the weekend and were giving them out. Other freebies were the Pocky and Gudetama (Sanrio‘s lazy egg character) chopsticks that were being handed out in literal fistfuls! My friend got me the Ariel Pop! โค and I finally picked up the commission I'd ordered… at AX12, lol.

It was good to be back to AX after my absence last year and being under the radar let me enjoy it more than I might have otherwise. Still, some of the shine has started to wear off and going to AX (or cons in general) is no longer the must-do that it used to be. Maybe when Looking for Miku is finally done and ready to be shown, I'll be excited for cons once again!

Pacific Media Expo 2009, Day 2

26 August 2014

Here is a brand new, never-before-seen album from The Vault to transition you from the new albums on Jimsha to the archive albums on Jimsha: The Beginning Story as I continue my sabbatical to finish editing my short film, Looking for Miku! ๐Ÿ˜€

Hey, it’s Maid Momo and friend! PMX 2009 was the first con I was planning to blog about, so I was going to upload this album to WordPress. Of course, due to one thing or another, it never actually happened so here is a look five years into the past! The related videos, however, actually did make it on to YouTube all those ages ago.

Can you believe the original J.J. Abrams reboot (I refuse to believe it’s anything but) of Star Trek was this many years ago?? D:

So many Ramune! This might’ve been the first time I actually tried one, I can’t remember. But it sure would be the perfect way to unwind after circling the parking structure for a full half hour because there were more than a few toolbags who decided that their crappy ride needed two parking spaces. ๐Ÿ˜›

I’ve only seen the original Lilo & Stitch, so I’m assuming this is Stitch and one of his 625 cousins?

I met her before I met her! It’s my friend Aoi Mizuno as Sawatari Mitsuki from He Is My Master!

Such awesome armor! I’m guessing Cloud‘s on the left so this must be Final Fantasy-related, but which one?

Akiyama Mio from K-ON! Hadn’t seen the show yet at this point (not for another couple of years, I think!) but just thought she looked really cool.

Cutie lolita-style girls sitting in the lobby.

I asked if he was cosplaying Chow Yun-Fat but he said he was cosplaying Mr. Chang, who is based on him, from Black Lagoon.

Harima Kenji and Tenma Tsukamoto from School Rumble! Was excited to see them since I was enjoying the show at the time (don’t get me started on that ending). I think I recognize them now as friends of my friend Aoi Mizuno! :O

Oh, wow — Princess Knight!

CosFest! (Videos linked below.) I think that’s Hagi from Takeriya Samurai.

Organic told me they weren’t going to be going back to PMX, and that they wouldn’t even be doing AX10! T_T They gave me some pretty sweet deals in ’09, and tossed in the Murata Range blindbox and postcard for free when I bought Noriko, Alice, and Mylene. Got the Hattori Mitsuru book at the swap meet; I loved Umishou and I find his character designs really appealing. Almost missed getting my ShizNat b/c they were in a bin of loose trading figs at the Toy Mandala booth, but luckily I saw them! ^_____^ Picked up Eri and Saki, too. The rest were from some of the other vendors at the con.

While it still wasn’t a great con, I did manage to take some photos. Since these have never been released before, I went ahead and did some light editing to them. It felt really weird to do it to such old photos, lol.

See the full album at The Vault on Facebook, check out the videos on my YouTube Channel, and be sure to Like my main Fan Page on Facebook so you can be alerted to my return!
